?We saw the benefit to the city?s elderly, disabled and low-income residents during our first Mission Omaha two summers ago,? says Mary Rosenthal of Mission Omaha Foundation, Inc. ?This year we?ve attracted twice as many young volunteers to hopefully do twice as much good work.?
Several local charities partnered with Mission Omaha for the 2011 workcamp, including Lutheran Family Services, Heartland Family Services and Catholic Charities.
The Mission Omaha project follows strict guidelines. To qualify for assistance the resident must be elderly, low-income, and or/disabled; the home should have obvious need of repair; the resident should own the home; the resident or another responsible adult must be home during the week of the workcamp; and the work environment must be safe for teens. There is a limit to the work participants are allowed to do, including painting, limited construction and weatherization. Volunteers are not allowed to do any electrical, plumbing, heating or any roof repairs; floor tiling, or repairs to windows, doors or gutters.
